Farmers Market

At El Mercado Popular you will find tasty food, fun music, fresh and locally-grown fruits and vegetables, a vibrant community, and a variety of those second-hand items you have been looking for! El Mercado Popularís Certified Farmers Market offers a unique venue to find fresh local produce, enjoy a fun family day, build community, and support local growers in the Watsonville area.

With assistance from a USDA Farmer's Market Promotion Program Grant, the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County partnered with Patricia Rodriguez, Manager of the Watsonville Flea Market El Mercado Popular in 2011 to launch and promote a Certified Farmers Market within El Mercado Popular.

The Farmers Market mission is to advance direct marketing opportunities and skills of small farmers while increasing community access to fresh produce and sustainable agriculture education.

The goals of the certified farmers market are to:

  • Increase access to markets for small to medium growers;

  • Increase access to fresh, healthy and affordable food choices for the community;

  • Increase knowledge and participation in voluntary conservation programs

Selling at El Mercado Popular is the first direct marketing experience for the majority of our certified farmers. Additionally, many of the farmers are now participating in on-farm conservation programs provided by the Resource Conservation District and USDA Natural Resource Conservation Services.

Flea Market

History of El Mercado Popular

Noticing the local community struggle economically and watching her farmer neighbors lose their businesses following the 2008 global economic crisis, Patricia Rodriguez wanted to promote an alternative market that would:

  • Increase access to markets for small to medium growers;

  • Increase access to fresh, healthy and affordable food choices for the community;

  • Increase knowledge and participation in voluntary conservation programs

Patricia opened El Mercado Popular in August 2009

El Mercado Popular is similar to community markets common throughout Mexico and Latin America. It provides an all-in-one affordable outdoor shopping experience for the local community.

Some of the goods available from local merchants include:

  • clothing

  • furniture

  • kitchenware

  • hardware

  • gardening needs

  • ag products

  • food and live entertainment

Come support local businesses and local farmers!
